Tile We Meet Again

Just before Mr. Tile was to be let loose on the bathroom walls there were two little jobs that needed doing.
You might remember that we were doing the Little Grass Shack theme. Essentially, most of the walls would be covered with the striped tile with a portion of wall, which was meant to represent ‘windows’ looking out onto a tropical scene (I refuse to use the M word at this stage).
To further create the illusion of the whole shack idea, Mr. Remodel wanted to put wooden poles in the corners and beside the ‘windows’. He looked on-line but didn’t find anything quite suitable so, as is his wont, he made some himself.
I believe I previously mentioned that Mr. Remodel was shamelessly using this remodel as a wanton excuse to buy new tools and equipment. Despite having a table saw already, he pleaded that he needed a better one such as the Porter Cable model he saw on sale at Lowe’s. Okay if you really, really need it.
So taking the new table saw and some four by fours, Mr. R made the wooden poles he wanted. He pushed the wood through the saw until it was roundish and then used a sure-form to round the edges. Since it wasn’t required to be perfectly smooth, it was easily done. After running it through the saw again to cut the poles in halves or quarters, it was ready to be stained and nailed in place.
Drum roll…

The other job was texturing the soffit and the ceiling. Because something (I’m not saying it) was going where the purple board was that area did not need to be sprayed. Since the texture on the walls and ceiling around most of the house is ‘orange peel’ we decided to keep to that where we sprayed rather than take the time and expense of changing it. We may regret it one day but it is not impossible to change in the future.

The nice thing about having Mr. Tile come in and work is that he was working doing his thing while Mr. Remodel was doing something else in another room. Another factor was that Mr. R had done tile before but never up a wall but no big surprise and novelty to Mr. Tile.

Check out the border on top of the tile. We saw some tile like this in a tile shop, which gave us the idea for using tile like this as a bamboo border.

We found a cheaper version at Morena Tile, which we liked just as well. It is amazing how the prices of similar looking tile can be so different. Sometimes you can get an idea of why one might be ten times the price, but not always.

Now the bathroom and design idea is really beginning to take shape.
